PARIS BABY

Tomorrow I'm going to Paris! I still have to pack the last things tonight, I'm gonna go to bed early (probably can't sleep anyway) and in 12 hours I'm on my way to Paris: the city of fashion, the city of lights, the city of love and the city of croissants.

The MET: exhibition Alexander McQueen

As you'll probably all know, I'm going to New York in one week time!
First a couple of days Paris and then my trip to the capital of the world begins. But don't worry, this isn't a blog about my trip. Let's face it: if I would talk about it a lot more, you'll probably kill me with a look of envy on your face. Or wouldn't you? ;) Wouldn't blame you though, if I had to put up with the fact that someone was going to NY in a week time and I wasn't going, well.. I don't even dare to think about the jealousy I would feel.
And besides, I'll blog about my trip a lot more.. when it's finished. You'll see all the photos and hear the stories first.

But for now, I'd like to relate something different. As you will probably know as well, last year the talented fashion designer Alexander McQueen commited suicide. Alexander McQueen, who was born in London, studied at the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Fashion and Art. After he graduated, he had the privilege to become head designer of Givenchy in only a few years time. Yes, talented he was.

He started his own label as well and was famous for his controversial designs. Hightech elements but also natural elements. The bigger the better. One of his last collections 'The Origin of the Species' includes crab shoes and reptile patterns. His last collection with all the gold and rococco details, was one of my favorite collections of all time.

The link between New York and Alexander McQueen is the biggest museum in the entire world: the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in the Upper East Side. The museum will have an exhibition 'Savage Beauty' to honour Alexander McQueen. It will focus on some extravagant pieces and will tell us something about the designer himself as well.

The exhibition starts in May which is perfect, since I'm going to the MET anyway, I can take a look at this exhibition myself as well! At least, I hope I'll be able to do that, and otherwise, you know, I'll just sneak out ;)

Let us hope this is a way to commemorate Alexander McQueen a bit more, for the talent that he was.

Rider on the storm

Never let me go

First of all, I want to say I'm sorry for my lack of posts recently.
It's a lame excuse I know, but I've been extremely busy last days.
School, work, nice things coming up (tell you more about it when I know more!), friends and my upcoming trips to Paris and New York. Well, I haven't really been busy with that, but more with the mental preparation ;)
Anyway, of course I was able to find time to go to the movies. I simply make time for that, especially for a classy film with style in the Verkadefabriek. Last tuesday I went to 'Never let me go', starring Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley.
Two distinctive British girls, best friends in real life, with already some acting experience together (in 'Pride & the Prejudice', where Carey Mulligan was Keira Knightley's little sister). This time Carey Mulligan had the leading part.

'Never let me go' is hard to understand. Though I thought I did very well at the beginning, eventually it turned out I didn't get the crux of the matter at all!
It's about two girls and a boy who go to a boarding-school in England in the seventies. They are very different. Carey Mulligan (Kathy) is quiet and loyal and Keira Knightley (Ruth) is more outgoing. Kathy falls for an outsider (his name is Tommy) who tends to get agressive sometimes. Though it looks as if he likes her as well, he ends up with Ruth eventually. Ruth and Tommy stay together for several years, which is heartbreaking for Kathy of course.

The curious thing about these three children, and with the other children at the boarding-school as well, is that they are scientific specimen, created in a laboratory. Yes, that's right, they are cloned. No parents, no lineage but the exact same version of some other person in this world.

The aim of their lifes, is that they give organs to sick people. When they are old enough, let's say between the age of 20 and 30, they have to donate organs, which is deadly. Most of the 'special children', who are more prescribed as lower class people than special in the meaning of great, die after their third donation, also called: the completion.

The film is beautiful. The story is brilliant, though based on nothing but fantasy, it's really creepy, in a psychologic way. The type-casting is extremely well. Carey Mulligan looks exactly like little Kathy and so does Keira Knightley look like Ruth.

If you want to see a good movie that will stay with you for a long long time, you ought to see 'Never let me go'. May sound eerie, but I have a feeling that it will take a long time for this film let's you go. In a positive way of course ;)
